His clothes might be those of a Viking, but, to her surprise, when he wakes up in the healing room, Brenda realizes that he speaks Scottish perfectly!
It turns out that Douglas McAlister, as his name is, was a warrior fighting for Benda’s father until he got imprisoned by the Vikings two years ago. The Highlanders were able to free the rest of the men, but Douglas is the only one who was left behind. Brenda is impressed that he escaped on his own, and she can not wait to present him to her father, letting the Laird know that she helped his warrior.
However, Brenda receives harsh words instead of praise as the Laird is unsure if he can still trust Douglas. The lass is tired of being treated as a child, and she also finds the clan’s behavior against Douglas cruel; not only did they leave him behind, but also, they now treat him as an enemy.
When Brenda learns that Douglas's family has a dispute with her father, she conducts the perfect plan; if she can help resolve the argument, she will prove to her father that she is a capable woman, and at the same time, she will help Douglas win back the trust of the clan. But Douglas has lived a long time with the Vikings, and the physical wounds from the shipwreck are nothing compared to the mental ones from the betrayal of his army.
To meet his family and settle the argument, Brenda embarks on a secret trip with a man who might be a ruthless killer looking for revenge. And, being the daughter of the Laird, she makes the perfect target. Her only hope is that the man she is traveling with will begin falling for her, as she does for him, and that behind his scared body and soul lies a heart that can still feel love.
